Introduction

Maternal and infant mortality is a tragedy that is still very rampant in Nigeria due to a number of factors which includes ignorance about safe motherhood, poverty, lack of adequate management and equipment in the nation’s health care system. Our project Maisha save a mother’s life seeks to address these problems through awareness and advocacy programs. Maisha is a Swahli word which means life. Mother’s bring life and it’s their fundamental right to get access to quality reproductive and maternal health care. Protecting women’s maternal health is human rights. Maisha save a mother’s life runs two programs:

  1. 4uture mumz campaign which aims at providing information on SRHR to young people of ages 13-18 years through school campaigns and the establishment of SRHR clubs in schools.
  2. Maisha mama kits project which aims at encouraging pregnant women from low income communities and IDP camps to seek professional help during pregnancy and after childbirth. One of the challenges that discourages women from low income communities and IDP camps seek professional help is finances. These women in most cases cannot afford the essentials for delivery. This is where TAAF comes in. We educate them on safe motherhood practices and also encourage them by supporting them with mama kits which contains all the essential for delivery. Since inception of our project, we have reached over 2000 women with education and mama kit support.
